California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). Henry Woodhouse (1884-1970), born in Turin, Italy, came to America in 1904. Woodhouse later became an author, a surveyor, a noted collector, and owner of a large collection of Washingtoniana.
